How verdicts are decided

Rulings follow the majority positions of the major halal certification bodies. Anything whose permissibility depends on an undeclared source — gelatin, E471, natural flavors — is marked doubtful rather than guessed. Your madhhab setting refines the rules for well-documented school differences.

Questions, answered

Is HalalLens a fatwa?

No. HalalLens is a shopping aid that reads ingredient lists and applies the published positions of major certification bodies. When permissibility depends on a source the label doesn't declare, we say "doubtful" and tell you why — the final decision is always yours.

What does "doubtful" mean?

Doubtful (mashbooh) means the ingredient is halal from some sources and not from others — gelatin, E471 emulsifiers, natural flavors — and the label doesn't say which. Look for a halal certification mark or a source declaration.

Does it work in my country and language?

Yes. Barcode lookups use Open Food Facts (worldwide), photo scans read labels in any language, and explanations come back in your app language. The travel guide covers 24 countries.

Can I set my madhhab?

Yes. Choose Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki, or Hanbali on the scan page or in your profile. Verdicts adjust for well-documented differences — seafood scope, rennet, wine vinegar — and Asr prayer time follows the Hanafi shadow rule.

Is it free?

You get 3 free scans every day, and the ingredient explorer, prayer times, and restaurant finder are always free. Premium adds unlimited scans, restaurant menu scanning, and the offline ingredient database.

Where does my data go?

Photos are analyzed and discarded — we don't keep images. Scan history stays on your device unless you sign in, in which case it syncs to your account so it follows you across devices.
