Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
Halal
- Typical source
- Synthetic
- Plain-language explanation
- E321 (Butylated hydroxytoluene, or BHT) is a synthetic chemical preservative widely used in foods like cereals, snacks, and fats to prevent them from going rancid. It is produced entirely through chemical reactions in a laboratory, typically starting from petroleum-derived materials like para-cresol and isobutylene. Because it is a fully artificial substance made from non-animal sources, it does not involve any alcohol, pork, or other prohibited ingredients in its production. Therefore, the majority of major halal certification bodies, including JAKIM, MUI, MUIS, ESMA, and HFA, consider BHT to be halal without any source-dependent restrictions. Muslim consumers can generally consume products containing this additive with confidence.
